A teenager, now 16 who cannot be named for legal reasons, has pleaded guilty to charges of voluntarily causing hurt, unlawful assembly, and voyeurism on Monday (May 20).
A 14-year-old boy was forced to apologize, strip naked, and kneel in front of a teenager after allegedly being blamed for previous assaults. The teenager filmed the incident and shared it on social media, leading to a police report being filed by the victim’s father.
DETAILS OF THE CASE :
According to the report, on September 8th, 2023, a 14-year-old boy was visiting a friend outside of school when he encountered a 15-year-old teenager from the same secondary school.
DPP Tan Pei Wei informed the court that the teenager later approached the younger boy and questioned him about why he had persuaded others to attack him, as per the report,
Upon seeing the boy, the teenager’s anger flared up as he believed the boy was the culprit behind his past beatings. The teenager then video-called an acquaintance known as “Ahkid”.
Confronting the younger boy, the teenager accused him of orchestrating the assaults against him. Despite the boy’s denial, the teenager proceeded to punch him in the chest.
“Ahkid” instructed the teenager to hand the phone to the younger boy and questioned him about the past incident, giving him the ultimatum of being physically assaulted or apologizing to the teenager.
APOLOGY, KNEEL NAKED, FILMING
The boy chose to apologize and was further instructed by “Ahkid” to strip naked and kneel in front of the teenager. Out of fear, the boy complied, kneeling naked and apologizing as instructed. The teenager filmed the incident and sent the video to his classmate via WhatsApp sometime between September 8th and 11th.
The video showed the boy being assaulted and contained two images, one of which showed him fully nude with an arrow pointing to his private parts, accompanied by a derogatory comment, the report added.
The teenager and his classmate then posted the video on social media platforms Instagram and TikTok. The victim’s father filed a police report on September 11th.
It is unclear from court documents how the photos were obtained or if “Ahkid” would face any charges in connection to the incident.
During the confrontation, “Ahkid” instructed the boy to apologize by kneeling naked in front of the teenager. Out of fear, the boy complied and fully undressed himself before apologising. The teenager then proceeded to kick and punch the victim, recording the assault on his mobile phone.
The video of the assault was sent to a classmate and posted on social media platforms Instagram and TikTok.
A police report was filed by the victim’s father on September 11, the report added.
The teenager, now 16 years old, was under 18 when the offences were committed.
The teenager has pleaded guilty to the charges and will be considered for probation, with a sentencing date set for July 8. If found suitable for probation, the teenager will have to comply with specified conditions, including regular reporting sessions to a probation officer, curfews, and community service.
It is unclear how the photos were obtained or if “Ahkid” will be facing any charges in connection to the incident.
GROUP OF GIRLS
Two weeks after the police report was filed, the teenager joined a group of girls to confront his 14-year-old female friend. One of the girls accused the victim of flirting with her boyfriend and other boys, but the victim denied it.
The group proceeded to assault the victim at a lift landing of a public housing block. They took turns slapping, punching, and kicking her, while the male teenager kicked her in the ankle. He also recorded the assault on a mobile phone and encouraged the others during the attack.
After 10 minutes of violence, the group made the victim kneel and apologize individually to each of them, recording it with a mobile phone and sharing it on Telegram.
Later that day, the victim’s mother noticed bruises on her daughter’s face and body and inquired about what had happened. The mother then accompanied her daughter to make a police report.
All four girls involved in the assault have been charged and have since pleaded guilty to their respective charges, as per the report.
Those found to be part of an unlawful assembly could face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and caning. Distributing images or recordings of another person without their consent could result in up to five years in jail, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments. Recording someone’s private parts could lead to a maximum sentence of two years in prison, a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties.
The punishment for causing harm intentionally is a maximum of three years in prison or a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.
