A 35-year-old man, Bhuiyan Md Robius Sani, has been sentenced to six days in jail for breaching a prohibition order that barred him from entering Changi Airport, following previous convictions related to touting activities.
According to ST, on October 27, 2023, Bhuiyan was caught handing a pouch containing gold chains to a Bangladeshi stranger at Changi Airport Terminal 3, defying the court-imposed restrictions.
Bhuiyan had already been banned from the airport since September 12, 2023, after being found guilty of similar offenses, which included asking passengers for their assistance in carrying items back to their home countries.
The prosecution previously described these actions as a nuisance, detrimental to the airport’s reputation and potentially aggressive towards travelers.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Phoebe Tan highlighted the continuous issue with individuals engaging in harassing behavior towards passengers, which prompted the initial prohibition order.
“These subjects’ actions are considered to be a nuisance to the Changi Airport Group due to their prevalence, their negative effect on Changi Airport’s reputation and the fact that such subjects could be aggressive at times to passengers”, DPP said.
After breaching the order twice in September, Bhuiyan was issued a second prohibition that extended his ban until September 12, 2024.
Despite these directives, he re-entered the airport and attempted to distribute items, including gold chains, to departing passengers.
A vigilant airport terminal manager observed Bhuiyan in the act and promptly notified the police, leading to his arrest.
Under Singapore law, those found guilty of criminal trespass may face imprisonment of up to three months and/or fines of up to $1,500.
Bhuiyan pled guilty on October 28, and his sentence was swiftly administered as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain order and safety within one of the world’s busiest airports.
