A 21-year-old Indian national, Legha Pawan, has been charged on Tuesday (Jul 2) with causing the death of a 33-year-old man, Mr Jasbir Singh, by performing a rash act near the waters of the Singapore River.
The incident took place in front of the Clarke Quay Central shopping mall at around 10.15pm on June 30, as per the media reports.
According to court documents, Pawan allegedly shoved Singh, causing him to stumble backwards, hit his head on some steps, and fall into the river before drowning. It is unclear what transpired between the two men before the tragic incident occurred.
As per the reports from Lianhe Zaobao, the two men had consumed alcohol and got into an argument over a woman leading up to the incident.
Police officers received a call about the incident on June 30 and dispatched divers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force to search the waters. Singh’s body was found and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Following an investigation, Pawan was identified and arrested on July 1. He is currently remanded at the Central Police Division and the case has been adjourned to July 9.
For causing another person’s death by performing a rash act, Pawan could face up to five years in jail and a fine.
