Woman charged for allegedly urging daughter to drop rape case against step father, promising ‘happy family’

A woman has been charged for allegedly trying to persuade her daughter to withdraw an aggravated rape case involving the girl’s stepfather, telling her they could be “one happy family again” if she did so.

The 34-year-old woman was charged on Feb 4 with three counts of performing acts that could pervert the course of justice. She is accused of encouraging her daughter to claim that she had given a false statement to the police during investigations into the alleged offence.

The man involved was the woman’s husband at the time.

All parties linked to the case cannot be identified due to a gag order imposed to protect the alleged victim’s identity. Court documents have been redacted and did not disclose the outcome of the man’s aggravated rape case, according to The Straits Times.

Court records stated that on June 23, 2022, the mother allegedly instructed her daughter to tell the police that she had made a false statement against the man, who was then under investigation.

The following day, the mother is accused of relaying the man’s directions, telling the girl to inform the Deputy Public Prosecutors that she wished to drop the case.

In early 2023, the mother allegedly told her daughter that admitting to giving a false statement would result in a punishment of about two years in a “girls’ home”. She is also accused of telling her daughter that the man could otherwise face a lengthy jail term of between 20 and 30 years.

The woman purportedly told her daughter that once she was released, the family could reunite and live happily together. She is also accused of promising to give her daughter anything she wanted if she agreed to withdraw the case. The woman’s pre-trial conference is scheduled for March 11.

If convicted, she faces up to seven years’ jail, a fine, or both for each charge.
