Teen Slashes Herself and Two School Staff After Phone Is Confiscated

A teenager injured herself and two school staff members with a penknife at a secondary school in April 2025 after becoming distraught over her mobile phone being confiscated, according to The Straits Times.

The girl, now 17, pleaded guilty on Jan 23 to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

A second similar charge will be taken into consideration when she is sentenced on March 4. She cannot be identified as she was 16 at the time of the offences and is protected under the Children and Young Persons Act.

The court heard that the incident occurred on April 28, 2025, when the teenager arrived late for school. She was met by the school’s operations manager, who confiscated her mobile phone before sending her to class, in accordance with school rules.

During a break at around 12.20pm, the girl went to look for the operations manager outside the general office to ask for her phone back. When he refused, she became upset. According to court proceedings, the teenager then pulled out a penknife, hurt herself with it, and slashed the man on his left arm.

The injured staff member called for help, and the school’s discipline master arrived to intervene. Instead of calming down, the girl also slashed the discipline master on the arm. Another school employee managed to disarm her and informed her that the police had been called.

Rather than waiting at the scene, the teenager left the school and went home. She was later arrested by the police, The Straits Times reported.

The court was told that the girl’s actions stemmed from her distress over not being allowed to retrieve her phone. Those convicted of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon face penalties of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Sentencing has been fixed for March 4, with the second charge to be taken into consideration.
