Sachin Kumar Rai Shiokumar Rai, a 36-year-old Singaporean man, was sentenced to two weeks in jail for a rash act endangering human life on Tuesday (Feb 20).
The incident occurred at a rented flat in Punggol where Sachin lived with a 60-year-old Singaporean man. The victim came home drunk on Jan 25, reeking of alcohol and with urine dripping from his pants.
The victim returned home on January 25 in an intoxicated state with an “awful smell”, according to the report.
An argument ensued between the two housemates, with Sachin scolding the older man for his behavior. The victim, however, dismissed Sachin’s reprimand and continued lying on his bed, playing loud music on his phone.
“Sachin again told the victim off, before pressing a bolster onto the victim’s face. The older man wriggled to create space between his face and the bolster as he felt breathless” the report added.
Upon realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sachin released his grip and the victim sought help.
During the court hearing, the police prosecutor highlighted the difficult nature of the victim, which may have contributed to Sachin’s actions.
For his actions, Sachin faced a possible sentence of up to six months in jail, a fine of up to S$2,500 (US$1,860), or both. Ultimately, he was sentenced to two weeks behind bars.
