A 39-year-old man, Neo Hui Ghim, has been charged with making a bomb threat on a cruise ship, causing extensive security checks and disruptions to operations.
The incident unfolded when Neo allegedly sent an email to Resorts World Cruises’ customer service department, warning of an explosive device on board if his monetary demands were not met.
According to report, Neo had written to the cruise operator saying “please return me back my monies else the ship will explode and everyone dropped into the sea.”
The police, alerted by the cruise operator, swiftly conducted thorough inspections of the ship at Marina Bay Cruise Centre.
Fortunately, no threat items were discovered.
In response to the incident, Neo has been remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for medical evaluation. If found guilty, he could face a jail term of up to seven years, a fine of up to $50,000, or both.
As a consequence of the heightened security checks, cruise ship operations were temporarily halted, leading to a two-hour delay in boarding for approximately 4,000 passengers. The police emphasized their commitment to treating all security threats seriously and taking action against those responsible for causing public alarm with false threats.
They also highlighted the significant cost of deploying public resources to address such incidents, emphasizing the disruption and fear they create for the public.
