Singapore Man, 61, Pleads Guilty to Stealing 320 Women’s Underwear Over Five Years

A 61-year-old Singaporean man has pleaded guilty after stealing 320 pieces of women’s underwear over a span of five years, with his offences only coming to light after he was caught red-handed outside a Bukit Batok flat.

The incident that led to his arrest occurred at about 4:20am on May 21, 2025.

A resident who was standing outside his home at Bukit Batok Central reported hearing “very light” footsteps along the corridor.

Sensing something amiss, he looked up and saw a man later identified as Dennis Kwek sneaking around.

Kwek was dressed in a black T-shirt, blue mask and black cap. Upon realising he had been spotted, he immediately turned and ran.

The resident chased after him and managed to detain him.

When he caught up with Kwek, the resident noticed that his trousers pockets were bulging. Growing suspicious, he checked and discovered six pairs of women’s underwear and four bras. Police were subsequently called to the scene.

Following his arrest, officers escorted Kwek back to his home, where they found another seven bags containing 310 pieces of women’s underwear.

In total, 320 undergarments were recovered. Kwek later admitted that he had stolen the items over the past five years.

According to a report by Shin Min Daily News, court proceedings on Feb. 27 revealed further details about his condition and background. The prosecution stated that Kwek had been diagnosed with alcohol use disorder by the Institute of Mental Health and that he experiences an urge to steal underwear after drinking.

At the time of his arrest, Kwek was working as an airline security guard. The judge ordered him to undergo mandatory treatment and evaluation.

Apologising in court, Kwek said he had quit drinking after his arrest and had not consumed any alcohol for 278 days. He added that he had joined a support group and set goals to give back to society, explaining that he had been shunned by friends, colleagues and family members following the incident.

He pleaded guilty to one count under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act for being in possession of items which may reasonably be suspected of being stolen or fraudulently obtained. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Apr. 1.

If convicted, he faces a possible jail term of up to one year, a fine of up to S$3,000, or both.
