A 33-year-old Singaporean was sentenced to four weeks’ jail for taking voyeuristic videos of female strangers and possessing more than 200 other obscene videos in his personal devices.
According to TodayOnline, Shaun Lio Wenwei was nabbed by staff members from the Faculty of Law of National University of Singapore (NUS) when he went there to “look at girls”.
Shaun Lio Wenwei pleaded guilty to two counts of insulting a woman’s modesty and one count of possessing obscene films. Another similar charge was taken into consideration for sentencing.
Those convicted of insulting a woman’s modesty can be jailed for up to a year or fined, or both. The offence of voyeurism carries an imprisonment term which may extend to two years, a fine, caning, or any combinations of such punishments.
During the court session, it was revealed that he took two upskirt videos, both of them seven seconds in length, in October and November 2019.
At Bus Stop :
Shaun Lio was at a bus stop when he noticed a woman wearing a skirt standing some distance away. When her back was turned to him, he walked towards her and aimed his mobile phone under her skirt.
For the second time also he did it in a similar way in an unknown location.
NUS Law Faculty :
On Feb 11, 2020 he went to the NUS law faculty Bukit Timah campus. The man entered the an area meant for staff members only and was trying to leave, a male employee stopped him who had not seen him before and did not think he worked there.
When Lio failed to explain what he was doing at the campus, the employee took him to the security post. A security officer then called the police, TodayOnline reported.
After the police arrived, they searched his mobile phone, suspecting that he had entered the premises to take voyeuristic videos. They then discovered several such videos that had been shared with Lio through the Google Drive application.
These clips were mainly front-view recordings of women using toilet cubicles, and their private parts were visible in many of them.
206 OBSCENE FILMS :
The officers arrested him and seized his phone, the next day his laptop was also seized by police in a raid at his house. They discovered 206 obscene films containing sexual material on his devices.
OUT OF CURIOSITY :
As for the three upskirt videos on his phone, Lio admitted to filming them out of curiosity because he wanted to see what was beneath the victims’ skirts.
The prosecution sought four to seven weeks’ jail, while Lio, who did not have a lawyer, asked for a lighter sentence.
“It’s been quite tough for me. I have changed my behaviour, I know what I did was wrong,” he said in court.
