Woman Struck by Bike Wheel Thrown From 14th Floor Succumbs to Injuries In 2014
In a tragic incident that occurred on June 8, 2014, a 67-year-old woman, Madam Mahani Abdullah, suffered a fatal injury when she was hit by a bicycle wheel that had been launched allegedly by a teenage boy from the 14th floor of an HDB block of flats in Eunos Crescent.
The incident resulted in Madam Mahani’s hospitalization due to injuries to her spinal cord and brain. Tragically, she succumbed to sepsis, a blood poisoning condition resulting from a urinary tract infection, approximately a month after the incident.
In a heartfelt gesture of forgiveness, Mr. Jazman Abd Aziz, aged 35 and one of Madam Mahani’s adult children, expressed forgiveness towards the teenager involved in the case, Abdul Hamid Rahmat, 16. Mr. Aziz forgave him to find peace of mind but expressed that he would not engage in direct communication with the teenager.
Abdul Hamid Rahmat, who had faced charges of rash acts initially, was later put on probation for three years in a court hearing that took place on a different date. He had pleaded guilty to three counts of performing rash acts, two of which resulted in grievous harm, and one for endangering human life. Two other charges of similar offenses were taken into consideration during the sentencing.
During the probation period, Abdul Hamid was required to spend a year in the Singapore Boy’s Hostel and be accompanied by an adult whenever he was outside his hostel and home. His mother and stepfather were bonded for $8,000 to ensure his good behavior, and he was subjected to a curfew from 9 pm to 6 am daily. Additionally, Abdul Hamid was mandated to perform 200 hours of community service, undergo psychiatric and psychological treatments, and attend counseling sessions.
Abdul Hamid Rahmat’s father, Mr. Rahmat Samani, expressed relief that Mr. Aziz had forgiven his son and emphasized that Abdul Hamid needed more attention. Mr. Samani, who had divorced Abdul Hamid’s mother about 15 years prior and had since remarried, maintained a cordial relationship with his ex-wife, who served as Abdul Hamid’s primary caregiver.
Abdul Hamid’s mother, though not named in the report, revealed her struggles with depression after learning about her son’s actions. She shared that Abdul Hamid is a special needs student who attends a special school. Visiting him regularly during his remand, she also mentioned seeking professional help due to the emotional toll of the situation.
Madam Mahani, who tragically lost her life in this incident, left behind three adult children and three grandchildren, who have been adjusting to life without her. Her 29-year-old disabled and bedridden daughter, whom Madam Mahani had cared for, is now looked after by her aunt.
Despite the challenges they have faced, the family is coping with the loss of their beloved mother, grandmother, and caretaker. Mr. Aziz fondly remembers his mother, saying, ‘There are many things I miss about my mother.
I think of her every day.’ Mr. Samani, reflecting on his son’s actions, stated, ‘Of course, I love my son very much, no matter what offenses he had committed. He is my flesh and blood.'”
On JAN 5, a rusty axe fell from the rooftop of Block 276, Tampines Street 22. Fortunately, a four-year-old boy and his mother narrowly escaped harm as the axe plummeted through the roof of a sheltered walkway, landing just 2 meters behind them.
SEPT 30, 2014, saw another unsettling incident in which open bags of clothes, broken plastic containers, plastic bags, and even a pillow were hurled from the 11th storey of Block 528, Jurong West Street 52. This alarming commotion lasted for 15 minutes, yet thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Going back further in time to FEB 5, 2013, a disturbing incident involved a tattoo artist who threw down various items, including two laptops, from his 12th-storey flat in Bukit Batok. The 35-year-old man faced consequences for his actions, being sentenced to a month in jail after pleading guilty to acting rashly and endangering the safety of other residents.
