In a recent court case, a 25-year-old man named Davin Lian Ke Xiang has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail and three strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to charges of extortion and voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant.

Three additional charges were taken into consideration during the sentencing.

According to the report, in the first case, which occurred in February 2022, Lian met a 30-year-old man on Grindr, and the two engaged in consensual sexual activities at Lian’s rented unit. Following the encounter, Lian demanded a SGD 700 television set from the victim.

When the victim refused to comply, Lian revealed a dark side to his intentions. He threatened to expose a video of the victim engaging in a sexual act, which he had secretly recorded, on social media.

Fearing the repercussions, the victim transferred SGD 700 to Lian. However, Lian didn’t stop there. He followed the victim home against his wishes and continued to demand additional money for the television.

In a separate incident in October 2022, Lian used the same alias, “Zach,” to meet a 25-year-old man on Grindr. Lian falsely claimed that he had been forced into sexual acts during their encounter and threatened to make a false police report, even calling the police in front of the victim.

Despite the victim’s attempts to reason with Lian, he demanded SGD 5,000 in exchange for not lodging the fabricated police report. When the victim indicated he couldn’t meet this demand, Lian suggested an alternative compensation of SGD 3,000 worth of Uniqlo products.

Once again, Lian utilized intimidation tactics, showing the victim the recorded bank account balance before finally accepting SGD 100 as compensation.

The case took a further disturbing turn on October 26, 2022, when a team of police officers arrived at Lian’s residence with the intention of arresting him in connection to the extortion case.

Lian resisted arrest and, in a shocking act, bit one of the officers on his leg, causing the officer to bleed. During the incident, witnesses heard Lian state that the officer “deserved” to be bitten.

The injured officer received medical attention, with a doctor noting a circular bite mark on his leg, along with clotted blood. He underwent a tetanus injection and screening for infectious diseases. As of now, the scar from the bite mark has not faded, the report added.

Deputy Public Prosecutor David Menon, during the court proceedings, argued for a jail term ranging from four-and-a-half years to five years and two months, along with four to five strokes of the cane. He highlighted the distress experienced by the victims due to Lian’s threats and extortion attempts.

Moreover, he pointed out Lian’s prior conviction in 2022 for making false communications to the police, emphasizing the escalation in Lian’s behavior from wasting police resources on false reports to using false police reports as weapons.
