A 42-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for the murder of a 34-year-old woman following a violent stabbing incident at a hardware store in Hougang.
The shocking event unfolded at approximately 11:05 AM at the Quan Long Nippon Paint hardware store located at Block 210 Hougang Street 21.
According to the Singapore Police Force, emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, they found the woman, believed to be a worker at the store, suffering from severe stab wounds. She was transported to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
A 26-year-old male colleague was also injured in the attack and was taken to a different medical facility.
The police said in a statement : “He was found with injuries sustained during the attack and was conveyed to the hospital. Preliminary investigations revealed that all parties are known to each other.”
The suspect is expected to face murder charges on Thursday (Dec 12), an offence that carries the death penalty in Singapore.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos that ensued during the attack, with one nearby shop worker stating she heard loud screams coming from the hardware store shortly before the police arrived.
Witnesses reported that the woman attempted to flee the scene but was unable to escape the assailant. A colleague reportedly intervened in the attack and suffered injuries while trying to subdue the suspect. According to bystanders, the victim sustained multiple stab wounds to her back.
Following the incident, heavily armed police officers secured the area, establishing a cordon around the hardware store, a neighbouring fruit stall, and a jewelry shop. Paramedics arrived shortly after the incident and rendered aid to the injured individuals.
