A 16-year-old teenager has been arrested by the Police for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Woodlands Drive 60.
The incident was reported on 16 April 2024, where debtor’s notes were found pasted on the main door of the unit.
Following ground enquiries and the review of images from Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division were able to identify the teenager and apprehend him on the same day, within seven hours of the report.
The debtor’s notes were seized as case exhibits, and preliminary investigations suggest that the teenager may be linked to other cases of loanshark harassment.
The teenager was charged in court on 18 April 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008 according to Police Press release.
The offence of loanshark harassment carries a penalty of a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes for first-time offenders.
The Police have reiterated their zero tolerance towards loanshark harassment activities and warned that those who engage in such acts will be severely dealt with in accordance with the law. The public is urged to steer clear of loansharks and not to aid or work with them in any capacity. If anyone suspects or has information on individuals involved in loansharking activities, they are encouraged to contact the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664.
