A 36-year-old woman was sentenced to two weeks in jail for drink driving after she was found to have nearly four times the legal alcohol limit in her system when she drove into Woodlands Checkpoint and mounted a kerb.

Rachel Yeo Tingru, who pleaded guilty to charges of driving without due care and attention and drink driving, was also fined $9,000 and disqualified from driving for 60 months, according to ST.

Court documents revealed that Yeo had 130 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

The incident occurred on the evening of March 2, when Yeo consumed two to three glasses of wine at a Dempsey restaurant before purchasing additional alcohol at a convenience store on Duxton Road.

After drinking less than half a can, she decided to drive home to Eunos but made a wrong turn, leading her to the Woodlands Checkpoint.

While speaking to an immigration officer from her car, Yeo’s vehicle unexpectedly surged forward, mounting the kerb. Prosecutors presented video footage in court, highlighting that Yeo’s hands were not on the steering wheel at the time of the incident. She was subsequently arrested after failing a breathalyser test, revealing that she had 3.7 times the legal alcohol limit, which authorities deemed “highly excessive” and indicative of her unfitness to drive.

During the hearing, the prosecutor emphasized the potential dangers of Yeo’s actions, noting that it was fortunate she did not collide with another vehicle or harm the nearby immigration officer, the report added.

In her defense, lawyer Mitchell Leon argued that Yeo was in an extreme state of distress at the checkpoint, suggesting that her actions were an accidental response to panic rather than a result of intoxication.

“Any person who is past the point of no return at Woodlands Checkpoint with no passport would be nervous,” he stated, describing her reaction as carelessness stemming from emotional turmoil.

Yeo is scheduled to begin her jail term on January 3, following the court’s approval for her to defer the sentence.
