A Traffic Police officer has pleaded guilty on Sep 5 to a charge of negligent riding following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
Muhammad Firdaus Yusoff, 32, was involved in a collision while responding to a road accident on June 21, 2023, according to Straits Times.
The incident, which occurred at the junction of Hougang Avenue 3 and Kim Chuan Drive shortly after 5:30 PM, involved Firdaus riding his motorcycle at speeds exceeding 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
The pedestrian, identified as Mr. Tan Leng Hing, was struck by Firdaus and suffered multiple injuries. Despite immediate medical attention and a rush to the hospital, Mr. Tan succumbed to his injuries approximately one hour later.
During court proceedings on September 5, Deputy Public Prosecutor Daphne Lim said that the tragic accident could have been avoided had Firdaus adhered to the speed limit.
The officer, who has a prior history of speeding incidents preceding his police service which began in 2020, faced scrutiny for his actions on duty.
Firdaus, who appeared without legal representation, expressed remorse and extended his condolences to Mr. Tan’s family, pleading for leniency, according to ST.
Following the incident, Firdaus was suspended from front-line duties as part of the police’s disciplinary measures.
The court is set to deliver the sentence for Firdaus on September 9, 2024.
