A 30-year-old Malaysian, Ng Long Hock, has been sentenced to five years in prison and three strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting a woman despite her discomfort and objections during their date.

WHAT HAPPENED :

As per the reports, Ng had initiated contact with the victim, a 21-year-old woman, through WeChat’s “add people nearby as friends” function in February 2022. They met for dinner at Golden Mile Complex on February 13, 2022.

During their meal, he openly discussed his high sex drive and expressed the opinion that couples should engage in sexual activity before formalizing a relationship.

Additionally, he revealed that he had been intimate with his previous girlfriends prior to establishing committed relationships with them. The victim expressed her discomfort and explicitly told him not to discuss sexual topics, but Ng disregarded her concerns.

Their WeChat conversations continued to revolve around the same topic, and they met again on February 14, 2022. Ng once more raised the issue of having sex before entering into a relationship. The victim shared her traumatic past relationship experiences with him and cried.

They decided to go to the victim’s residence, believing that her housemates would be present. However, they were alone upon arrival. Ng suggested moving to the victim’s bedroom due to the lack of air conditioning in the living room.

In her bedroom, Ng inquired about her past hurts, and the victim began to share her painful experiences. At this point, Ng hugged her without reciprocation and sexually assaulted her beneath her shorts. The victim resisted, slapped Ng, and shouted, prompting him to halt his advances.

FRIEND REPORTS TO POLICE

After the assault, Ng apologized and left, also sending an apology via WeChat. The victim promptly blocked Ng on WeChat and reported the incident to her roommate and friends, who advised her to contact the police.

Cory Wong, the defense lawyer from Invictus Law, argued for a sentence not exceeding five years in jail and three strokes of the cane.

Wong emphasized that the sequence of events unfolded rapidly and noted, “Putting aside any misconceptions he may have had… within seconds, when the situation became unequivocally clear to him, he withdrew and expressed personal and written apologies.”

Wong highlighted the relative newness of the case, which nearly escalated to the High Court, and the early guilty plea by his client. He acknowledged Ng’s grave mistake but underscored Ng’s acknowledgment of wrongdoing.

Wong also pointed out that Ng’s elderly parents in Malaysia were exhibiting signs of dementia.

Sexual assault by penetration carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in jail, a fine, or caning.
