A 25-year-old man, whose identity remains protected due to a gag order on the victim’s identity, has faced legal consequences for his disturbing actions in the aftermath of a turbulent romantic relationship with a 35-year-old woman.
The man has been sentenced to five months in jail and fined $2,000, On Oct 31.
The sentencing follows his guilty plea to two counts of threatening to distribute intimate images and one count of harassment, stemming from his tumultuous relationship with a 35-year-old woman.
The Straits Times reported that the couple had been involved in an on-and-off romantic relationship since 2018, during which they exchanged intimate photos and videos.
Trouble began on February 27, 2022, when they were chatting on WhatsApp, and the man became upset, suspecting that she intended to involve other men in her life. He responded by threatening to use black magic and using derogatory language towards her, prompting the victim to file a police report due to the harassment she experienced on WhatsApp.
However, the situation escalated after the couple’s breakup on April 30, 2022. The man sent the woman a nude photo of herself, accompanied by threats to upload it on Facebook.
His actions were driven by resentment towards her moving on and finding a new partner. In response to these threats, the victim made another police report.
Less than three months later, on July 19, the man once again targeted the woman by sending her intimate images, including two nude photos and two in underwear. He threatened to display these images as his profile picture on WhatsApp if she continued to ignore him, leading to yet another police report being filed by the victim.
During his court appearance, the man, who was not represented, cited stress and grief as contributing factors to his actions, as he had recently lost his mother. He emphasized that his threats were borne out of anger and requested leniency, explaining that he was now married and needed to care for his pregnant wife, who was present in court and visibly emotional.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chong Yong highlighted the man’s history of abusive behavior, noting that he had been previously jailed in 2021 for similar offenses related to the same woman, serving a 10-month sentence.
The prosecutor also revealed that the man had initially considered claiming trial for his most recent offenses.
In response, the man expressed his intention to focus on the future, having recently married in April.
The court ordered him to pay the $2,000 fine, with the stipulation that failure to do so would result in an additional 10 days of imprisonment. Each charge of threatening to distribute intimate images carried a maximum penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, caning, and a fine.
