A 27-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been sentenced to 45 weeks’ imprisonment on Thursday (Dec 7) for filming voyeuristic videos of two of his female friends, including his friend’s girlfriend.
The man pleaded guilty to two counts of voyeurism, with a third charge taken into consideration, according to report.
The 27-year-old Malaysian, who is also a Singapore permanent resident, was sentenced to 45 weeks’ jail on Dec 7.
FILMED 20 TIMES
The court heard that the offender was part of a group of four friends, consisting of a 27-year-old woman, her 26-year-old boyfriend, and another 26-year-old woman. They had known each other since their undergraduate days and later shared a flat in Singapore.
The first victim, the 27-year-old woman, was also the offender’s colleague. In early 2021, the man began recording upskirt videos of the first victim in their shared flat. He then escalated his actions by filming her in their office as well.
In total, he filmed her 20 times in both locations.
Sometime in 2022, the offender extended his disturbing behavior to the second female victim by recording upskirt videos of her in the flat on at least nine occasions. He took his voyeurism to an even more invasive level by filming the first victim while she was showering in the master bedroom, capturing her face on-camera.
The final incident occurred when the offender was home alone and the victim returned home. After a brief chat, the victim went to shower, unaware that she was being targeted. The man extended his phone into the toilet window, intending to record her. However, the victim noticed him and immediately shouted. The offender retracted his phone, and the victim promptly informed her boyfriend about the incident.
The man apologized to the victim, concocting a false story about hearing water sounds in the toilet and wanting to see who was inside. He deleted all the voyeuristic material from his phone and Google Drive account, believing he had successfully erased all evidence.
However, when the victim’s boyfriend returned to the shared flat, he confronted the offender and discovered additional videos and screenshots that had not been deleted.
Subsequently, he accompanied the offender to a police center at approximately 3 am on Nov 24, 2022, to lodge a report.
During the trial, the offender’s lawyer requested the minimum possible sentence, emphasizing his client’s remorse and intention to plead guilty from the outset. The lawyer stressed that his client had cooperated fully and voluntarily turned himself into the police.
In addition, the offender expressed his apologies to the victims and had sought self-help by attending counseling sessions at two centers. A counselor, who is also a pastor, was present in court to provide support for the offender.
Voyeurism is a serious offense in Singapore that carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments.
