A fifteen-year-old student from Singapore lost her life during a snorkeling trip while participating in a whale shark research project in the Maldives.

The incident occurred near Alif Dhaalu Atoll Dhigurah, where it is reported that the student, identified as Jenna Chan, was struck by the propeller of a running boat as she dived into the sea.

Emergency services quickly responded to the accident, and Jenna was rushed to the Dhigurah Health Centre; however, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In a statement issued late on Friday (Nov 8), Dr. Michael Johnston, the chief executive officer of St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) International, confirmed the heartbreaking news.

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of one of our students during a recent overseas school research trip,” he said.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family during this difficult time. The school community is mourning our tragic loss, and we are providing all possible support to the family.”

Following the incident, Jenna’s family has traveled to Male, accompanied by a team led by the high school principal to provide support during this challenging period, according to CNA report.

The school, known for its outdoor education programs, engaged students in expeditions that combine learning with adventure. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation by the local police.

Dr. Johnston told CNA that the school’s commitment to respecting the family’s privacy and refrained from providing further details, stating, “Out of respect for the family’s privacy, please understand that we are unable to share further details at this time.”

Police are investigating the incident further.

This week two Singaporean students have lost their lives in separate incidents.

A 25-year-old student was fatally stabbed in Brussels during a late-night altercation, while a 15-year-old named Jenna Chan died in a snorkeling accident in the Maldives.
