A 52-year-old Singaporean police officer, Tan Bee Sen Bernard, has been charged with multiple offenses following a serious traffic incident involving a motorcyclist.
The charges were brought against him on Thursday, September 12, under the Road Traffic Act.
According to court documents, Tan reportedly had over double the legal limit of alcohol in his breath, with a reading of 78 microgrammes per 100ml, at approximately 11:58 PM on August 18 of the previous year.
The incident occurred as Tan was driving along Bartley Road East, where he allegedly lost control of his vehicle.
Reports indicate that his car first collided with a concrete wall before veering into the path of a 28-year-old female motorcyclist, causing her grievous injuries.
In the aftermath of the collision, Tan is accused of failing to stop and provide his personal details to the injured motorcyclist. Instead, he allegedly left the scene, removing his vehicle without the permission of a police officer, despite it being involved in a traffic accident.
In response to inquiries from media, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that they have begun investigations into Tan following the incident.
According to the authorities, Tan has been suspended from his duties.
Tan has been offered bail set at S$15,000 and is scheduled to return to court in October.
If found guilty of driving under the influence, he could face a prison sentence of up to one year, alongside fines ranging from S$2,000 to S$10,000 or both. He could also face similar penalties for driving without due care and attention resulting in grievous hurt, with the possibility of a driving ban as a further consequence.
