Three people, including a toddler, have died in a fire incident that happened in the living room of a flat in Bedok North on early Friday morning (May 13).
According to the statement released by SCDF, today (13 May) at about 6.35am, they were alerted to a fire at a flat in Bedok North. During the operation a total of 60 persons were evacuated from neighbouring units as a precautionary measure.
The fire involved the contents of a living room in a unit on the 4th floor. SCDF extinguished the fire with one water jet.
During the firefighting operation, SCDF found four unconscious persons in the unit amidst a vast accumulation of combustible items.
Three persons, including a toddler, were found in the bedroom while one person was found in the living room. Due to the clutter in the bedroom, firefighters had to force their way into the bedroom to conduct the rescue operation.
SCDF’s emergency medical services crew then commenced CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on two of the victims. All three persons were subsequently conveyed to Changi General Hospital.
The person found in the living room was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.
SCDF also conducted forcible entry into an adjacent residential unit and rescued three persons. They were assessed for minor injuries and subsequently refused conveyance to the hospital.
A total of 60 persons were evacuated from neighbouring units as a precautionary measure.
In an update, ST reported that the toddler and his mother, 34, and a man, 35 – who live in the unit in Block 409 Bedok North Avenue 2 – were taken to hospital unconscious.
The man and the toddler died from their injuries at the hospital, the police said. The mother remains in critical condition.
Another 56-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Speaking to reporters, MP for the estate Tan Kiat How said that five people lived in the affected unit, including a couple who rented out the room to three other tenants – a couple and a young toddler.
Before speaking to the reporters MP thanked the resident who have alerted him to a fire this morning, on Facebook.
I am glad most residents are ok. Unfortunately, the residents of the unit, including a mother and a young toddler have been sent to the hospital. My thoughts are with them and I hope they will be alright, the MP said.
Our grassroots leaders are helping families who have been asked to temporarily evacuate. We have opened up the rooms at HeartbeatBedok to hold everyone. I thank residents for their cooperation and understanding. I am also grateful to @myscdf for their quick response. The agencies will look into the cause of this fire, the MP added.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
