A 67-year-old man was sentenced to 11 months and two weeks’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to two charges of molestation involving a 10-year-old girl in a primary school in May 2024.

WHAT HAPPENED
According to the Straits Times, the incidents occurred on May 6, during recess and physical education classes, while the girl was playing and sitting in different areas of the school.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Xavier Tan detailed the events in court, stating that the victim was near the school canteen around 11:15 a.m. when the offender called out to her. He approached her, hugged her from the front, and moved his body in a lewd manner.
“Don’t touch me!”
The girl did not reciprocate the hug and ran into the canteen.
Later, she was sitting at a table when the man approached again, sat beside her, and placed his arm around her back. When approached by a boy, the man left her side.
Around 11:30 a.m., as the girl was walking back to her classroom, the man approached her once more and tried to kiss her. She cringed and turned her head away, preventing the kiss, and then walked away to join her classmates.
According to the report, “The victim cringed and turned her head away, preventing the accused from successfully kissing her. She then walked away… and joined her schoolmates.”
Later that day, in the indoor sports hall during physical education, the man again hugged her from behind and moved his body lewdly, prompting the girl to exclaim “Don’t touch me!” before he let go. He then moved in front of her, hugged her again, and repeated the lewd movement.
A video footage of the incident, played in court, showed the man committing the offense in front of nearby schoolmates, the report added.
The girl confided in her teacher at the end of the day, leading to police involvement and the man’s subsequent charges.
The court noted that for molesting a child under 14, the maximum penalty is five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or caning. However, due to his age over 50, the man was ineligible for caning.
