A 20-year-old woman, Claris Ling Min Rui, was sentenced on Monday (Oct 27) to 12 months of supervised probation after making a false rape report against a man who refused to pay her S$1,200 following consensual sex.
Under the probation order, Ling must remain indoors between 10pm and 6am unless the Probation Services Branch modifies her curfew, according to Channel News Asia.
She is also required to complete 60 hours of community service, while her parents have posted a S$5,000 bond to guarantee her good conduct.
Ling had earlier pleaded guilty in September to two charges — providing false information to a public servant and using threatening language intended to cause alarm.
Investigations revealed that Ling met the 43-year-old victim through the dating website Sugarbook. They agreed to meet in March this year, with the man offering to pay her S$200 for her time. After visiting a bar together, the pair engaged in consensual sex at a hotel.
Following the encounter, Ling demanded S$1,200 from the man, who refused to pay. When he instead offered S$500, Ling turned down the amount and threatened to accuse him of rape. She later followed through by contacting the police and sending him a text message saying, “You’re f*ed.”
During police questioning, Ling initially maintained her false allegation but eventually admitted that she had fabricated the rape claim due to anger over the unpaid money.
For giving false information to a public servant, Ling could have faced up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
For using threatening words to cause alarm, she could have been sentenced to six months in jail, fined up to S$5,000, or both.
