A 29-year-old man, Islam Md Rafiqul, a bangladeshi has been sentenced to three months’ jail after pleading guilty to distributing intimate content of someone without their consent. This comes after Islam sought revenge against his ex-girlfriend by sending her friend 10 intimate pictures of her.
According to the report, the victim, a 33-year-old Indonesian domestic worker who cannot be named due to a gag order, had previously consented to Islam taking the photographs during their relationship and trusted him to delete them afterwards.
However, after their relationship ended, Islam was upset and wanted to humiliate his ex-girlfriend by distributing the intimate images. He distributed the 10 intimate images in order to humiliate the victim.
The four charges against Islam stemmed from an incident on the morning of April 9, 2023.
He had entered his ex-girlfriend’s home in the Beauty World area without permission and used a belt to restrain her hands to a railing. Additionally, he used the string from her hoodie to wrap around her neck and stole her handphone valued at S$290.
“The victim had previously consented to the accused taking the photographs during their relationship, and had told him to delete the photographs afterwards,” said DPP Jayaletchmi in court according to the report.
Deputy Public Prosecutor J Jayaletchmi called for a jail term between three to five months for Islam, emphasizing that he acted out of malice and spite towards his ex-girlfriend. The victim believed that the intimate images would be deleted as per her instructions to Islam.
Islam appeared in court via video-link from remand and was seen crying and pleading for leniency. Court documents did not disclose the reason for the breakup or Islam’s occupation in Singapore.
For distributing intimate images without consent, Islam could have faced up to five years in jail, a fine, caning, or a combination of these punishments.
