A 27-year-old man, Daniel Fock Ming Chai, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for a violent attack on his older brother following a domestic dispute that escalated dramatically.

Fock pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon, while two additional charges of mischief by fire were taken into consideration during sentencing.

According to TODAY, the incident, which occurred on June 16, last year, stemmed from a series of conflicts between the two brothers, exacerbated by their strained relationship, which has been marked by tension since childhood.

Court documents reveal that the brothers’ parents divorced in 2000, leading to a separation that continued into adulthood.

On the day of the incident, Fock was infuriated after discovering used dental floss left on his toothbrush by his brother, leading him to retaliate by using a homemade flamethrower to burn a soap holder in the bathroom.

An hour later, in response to the escalating situation, the older brother turned off the home’s Wi-Fi in an attempt to provoke Fock into leaving the flat, which further incited Fock’s anger.

In a fit of rage, Fock retrieved both the flamethrower and a chopper measuring approximately 16cm. He then used the flamethrower to scorch the bottom of his brother’s bedroom door, prompting the older sibling to investigate the commotion.

As tensions boiled over, Fock attacked his brother with the chopper, inflicting life-altering injuries to his hand, chest, and leg.

Their sister, upon finding their brother bleeding in the living room, called for emergency medical assistance. The older brother underwent surgery for severed nerves and spent four days hospitalized, with an expected recovery period during which he was advised 40 days of medical leave.

Unfortunately, the court documents noted that he may experience permanent numbness in his fingers due to the injuries sustained during the attack.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Colin Ng advocated for a prison sentence of 16 to 18 months in a case of domestic violence where the accused inflicted harm on his brother while they lived together.

“Deterrence is the dominant principle in offences of domestic violence as such violent acts constitute and abuse the bonds of trust and interdependency that exist between family members,” Ng stated according to TODAY.

Fock faced a maximum sentence of seven years in prison for his actions, alongside the possibility of fines, caning, or a combination of punishments.
