Shocking case that has captured public attention again after former police officer Iskandar Rahmat, 34, was executed on Wednesday 5 February 2025 after being convicted of the brutal murders of a car workshop owner and his son during a robbery attempt in July 2013.

BACKGROUND

The harrowing events unfolded on July 10, 2013 when Iskandar, a 14-year veteran of the police force, plotted to steal a significant sum of cash from 67-year-old Mr. Tan Boon Sin, who he believed kept money in a safe deposit box.

On that fateful day, Iskandar persuaded Mr. Tan to withdraw his savings from the box under the pretense of installing a camera. He then escorted the unsuspecting victim back to his home on Hillside Drive, where he unleashed a violent attack, stabbing and slashing Mr. Tan 27 times.

The assault continued when Mr. Tan’s 42-year-old son, Mr. Tan Chee Heong, entered the house; Iskandar also attacked him, resulting in fatal injuries.

In a horrifying scene witnessed by onlookers, Iskandar attempted to flee the scene in his Toyota Camry, dragging Mr. Tan Chee Heong’s body for nearly a kilometer along Upper Serangoon Road, leaving a trail of blood. The gruesome crime shocked the community and initiated a massive manhunt that lasted approximately 54 hours before Iskandar was apprehended in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

During his trial in 2015, Iskandar did not contest the killings but claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Mr. Tan had attacked him with a knife first.

However, the prosecution argued that Iskandar had planned the murders with the intent to kill, pointing to the multiple stab wounds inflicted on both victims, primarily in vital areas.

High Court Justice Tay Yong Kwang, in delivering the verdict, stated that Iskandar had attacked the two men “cruelly and relentlessly with the clear intention of causing death.”

Iskandar’s appeal in 2016 against his conviction and life sentence was dismissed in 2017. He later filed a complaint against his trial defense team, alleging misconduct, but the Law Society determined no formal investigation was necessary.

Despite repeated attempts to pursue his claims, including a failed appeal to the Court of Appeal in July 2021, Iskandar’s assertion of wrongdoing by his defense lawyers did not gain traction in the courts.
