In a recent court ruling, Ng Chi Chiu, a 36-year-old man, was convicted and sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment for multiple theft offenses. The charges include stealing from renowned Apple outlets and a duty-free shop. The total value of stolen goods amounts to approximately $18,253.
The thefts occurred between January and April of this year, raising concerns among authorities and local businesses. Reports were initially filed with the police on May 12, prompting a thorough investigation into the matter.
According to Police Press Release, it was discovered that Ng had targeted three Apple outlets, pilfering multiple electronic devices with a combined worth of around $17,660.
Additionally, on March 17, he stole several bottles of perfume valued at $593 from the Shilla Duty Free shop, located in Terminal 3 Departure Transit Central at Changi Airport.
Offences Committed :
- One charge of theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code 1871; and
- Two amalgamated charges of theft in dwelling under Section 380 of the Penal Code 1871 read with Section 124(4) of the Criminal Procedure Code 2010.
Thanks to the meticulous efforts and close collaboration between Jurong Police Division and Airport Police Division, Ng’s identity was successfully established. His arrest followed on October 25, and he was officially charged in court on October 27.
The Singapore Police Force reaffirms its commitment to combatting shop theft cases and ensuring that offenders face appropriate consequences within the purview of the law.
Emphasizing the importance of community involvement, local authorities intend to continue working closely with stakeholders to prevent and deter such criminal activities.
Authorities also extend a reminder to retailers to remain vigilant against shop thieves, especially during peak periods when large crowds are expected. It is crucial for businesses to implement robust security measures and remain proactive to safeguard their premises and merchandise.
“The Police take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. The Police will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft. The Police would also like to remind retailers to remain vigilant against shop thieves, especially when large crowds are expected”, the police added in its press release.
