DETAILS OF THE CASE
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Wenjie, Su confronted her at her home, insisting she give him money without disclosing the purpose of his request. When she refused, the situation escalated into a physical altercation.
Court documents revealed a history of abuse, with the PPO having been established since 2022 due to Su’s previous violent encounters with his grandmother. Prosecutor Cheah highlighted that Su had been admitted multiple times to the Institute of Mental Health for his aggressive behavior, which included pinching and choking his grandmother in prior incidents.
On the day of the assault, after failing to secure the money he demanded, Su followed his grandmother to her bedroom, where he began to kick her bed frame before choking her.
When she attempted to free herself, he reportedly pulled her hair, causing her pain and leaving bruises on her neck and redness on her scalp. The distressing episode ended when the grandmother managed to call her son, Su’s uncle, who alerted the police. Su was arrested later that day.
During sentencing, DPP Cheah condemned Su’s actions as “appalling,” highlighting the repeated nature of the abuse and the violation of the protective order his grandmother had sought to safeguard herself. The prosecution sought a sentence of 12 to 14 weeks, underscoring the severity of the offense.
DPP Cheah : “After years of repeated abusive behaviour towards his 84-year-old grandmother, the accused has now strangled her and then pulled her hair – all because she refused to give in to his demands for money from her.
“His actions were a repeated breach of the PPO that his grandmother had tried to protect herself with.”
In court, Su expressed remorse and stated his intention to pursue his studies and secure employment upon his release, aiming to make his grandmother proud.
“I want to get a diploma because I want to make my grandma proud,” he said as per the report.
District Judge Eugene Teo responded thoughtfully, urging Su to adhere to his plans and avoid reoffending in the future.
Under the law, voluntarily causing hurt can result in imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to $5,000, or both
