In a case highlighting the disturbing trend of upskirt videos, a 24-year-old Malaysian man, Ang Yuan Jie, has been sentenced to five months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to voyeurism. His actions involved secretly recording women at various MRT train stations in Singapore over the course of a week.
According to Today’s report, the incident came to light on May 24, 2022, when Mr. Ong Beng Kee, an SMRT station master at Ubi MRT Station, noticed Ang behaving suspiciously.
Observing Ang following a female victim wearing a skirt, Mr. Ong witnessed him attempting to capture intrusive footage using his mobile phone placed under her skirt, pointing upwards between her legs. Taking immediate action, Mr. Ong detained Ang and alerted the victim while requesting assistance from the police.
Upon arrest, Ang’s mobile phone was examined, revealing 10 upskirt videos involving different women. The recordings, dated between May 17 and 24, 2022, served as evidence of Ang’s deliberate and knowing actions. During investigations, Ang admitted to having a “fetish” for upskirt videos and acknowledged recording the footage at various MRT stations.
During the court proceedings, defense lawyer Cheryl Sim argued against the prosecution’s claim of premeditation, stating that Ang’s actions were impulsive rather than pre-planned. Sim also urged the court to consider leniency, emphasizing that Ang had learned a “painful lesson” from the incident.
In his one-page personal statement, Ang apologized for his behavior, acknowledging its “heinous” nature and attributing his actions to struggles with depression and anxiety, today reported.
District Judge Luke Tan, while recognizing that this was Ang’s first offense, concurred with the prosecution’s position that deterrence was necessary. Given the degree of premeditation involved and the fact that Ang had targeted 10 different women successfully within a week, the judge handed down a five-month jail sentence.
Under Singaporean law, voyeurism is punishable by imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties. In this case, Ang received a jail sentence and will serve time for his offenses.
