A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 weeks in jail on after being convicted of insulting the modesty of a woman by secretly recording his fiancée’s sister while she showered.
The sentencing took place on Thursday, August 22, following the man’s guilty plea to a charge related to the incident, according to TODAY.
An additional charge of possessing voyeuristic material was considered during sentencing. The offender, whose identity is protected by court order to shield the victim’s identity, developed a disturbing pattern of behavior that began in 2017 when he began watching videos of women recorded without their consent.
By 2019, his actions escalated as he filmed his fiancée during intimate moments, though this was reportedly done with her consent.
The man’s voyeuristic desires further intensified, leading him to target his fiancée’s sister.
Court documents revealed that he surreptitiously placed his iPhone in the restroom where he suspected the victim would be showering. Over time, he recorded a total of nine videos of her without her knowledge.
Additionally, he recorded her showering on two occasions during trips to South Korea and Malaysia.
The investigation into his actions began on July 13, 2022, when his fiancée discovered the hidden phone while using the restroom. Curious about its contents, she accessed the device using his password and was horrified to find videos of her sister showering. Following her discovery, she informed her sister, and the two women subsequently filed a police report.
Court did not disclosed whether the offender is still in a relationship with his fiancée.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Darren Sim had recommended a sentence of 24 to 28 weeks.
Under the law, the man faced a maximum penalty of one year in jail or a fine for his actions.
