A former police officer, Siew Weng Chuin, 25, was fined S$500 on Thursday (May 9) after pleading guilty to cheating a noodle stall operator in Hougang out of S$36.50.
Siew, who has since resigned from the Singapore Police Force, admitted to transferring money between two of his bank accounts and pretending to pay the stall’s operator.
According to the report, Siew began patronising the noodle stall in April last year, where he made several orders without actually paying for them. On one occasion, he ordered food amounting to S$25.60 and pretended to make the payment via PayNow bank transfer.
Instead of transferring the money to the stall’s account, he changed the payee to his own account, deceiving the victim into thinking that he had paid for his food.
Siew proceeded to show the victim the transaction, leading her to mistakenly believe that he had paid for his food.
In a separate incident on Apr 17, 2021, after ordering food worth S$10.90 and failing to make payment once more, the victim inquired about the previous payment of S$25.60. She mentioned that she couldn’t locate the transaction in the stall’s bank account.
“The accused acted surprised and told (the victim) that the payment had gone through and showed (the victim) his transaction history that reflected a transfer of S$25.60,” the prosecution told the court as per the report.
The victim mistakenly believed that the payment was still outstanding. She requested Siew to share his phone number with her, but he provided her with a number that was no longer in service.
The victim confronted Siew on May 31 last year and called the police, leading to his arrest.Siew made full restitution on Apr 18 this year. For cheating, he could have been jailed for up to three years, fined, or both. Court documents showed that Siew paid the fine imposed on him.
