A 31-year-old Singaporean man has pleaded guilty to offences involving voyeurism and insulting the modesty of a woman after allegedly sending her an artificial intelligence-generated nude image, secretly installing spy cameras under her workplace desk, and later filming inside her home through an open window, according to Channel News Asia.
According to court proceedings on Monday (May 11), Desmond Han Jiancong admitted to one count each of installing equipment to enable voyeurism and insulting the modesty of the victim. Three additional charges will be taken into consideration during sentencing.
The court imposed a gag order to protect the victim’s identity. Her age and workplace were redacted from court documents.
Han and the victim were acquaintances. At one point, Han had asked the woman out for a meal, but she declined to meet him alone. When she questioned whether he had romantic feelings for her, Han reportedly replied that he merely viewed her “as an older sister”.
On Aug 27, 2024, Han sent the woman a Telegram message containing an image of a topless woman whose face resembled the victim. Investigations later revealed that Han had used a photograph of the victim to generate the image using artificial intelligence.
The victim was deeply disturbed and confronted Han over the image. Han denied responsibility, claiming that although the Telegram account was linked to his phone number, he had been hacked. He also claimed that his Instagram and Facebook accounts had been compromised.
The woman later discovered that Han had unfriended her on both social media platforms before attempting to reconnect with her again. She rejected the requests.
Months later, on Jan 27, 2025, Han allegedly sent the victim another Telegram message containing a photo showing the back view of her body accompanied by a lewd caption. The woman did not know the photograph had been taken and became fearful for her safety.
She later filed a police report, informing officers that she had been repeatedly harassed by Han through Telegram between December 2024 and January 2025. She also disclosed the earlier AI-generated nude image incident.
Court documents showed that Han had ordered spy cameras online on Jan 20, 2025. After receiving them several days later, he allegedly placed three hidden cameras beneath the victim’s desk at her office, a location he had access to.
The cameras were positioned to capture “upskirt” footage of the victim’s private parts. Han reportedly attached the devices underneath the desk using double-sided tape and connected them to a nearby phone hidden inside a locker to provide internet access for a live video feed. The phone was also connected to a portable charger so the transmission could continue for extended periods.
Between Jan 23 and Feb 7, 2025, Han allegedly installed the cameras at the victim’s workstation on two or three separate occasions, usually arriving around 7am to avoid detection.
The scheme was uncovered on Feb 7, 2025, when the victim noticed a hidden camera attached to a cardboard box under her desk. She covered the lens, informed her manager, and contacted the police.
On the same day, and without the victim’s knowledge, Han allegedly travelled by public transport to her residence after setting up the cameras at her workplace.
At around 8.40am, he reportedly discovered nobody was home and inserted his hand through open windows to record at least five videos of the interior of the residence because he wanted to observe the victim’s living conditions.
Police later informed the victim that three spy cameras had been found at her desk and that Han had visited her home. The revelations left her alarmed and fearful that he might target her again.
Investigators stated that no recordings were recovered from the seized devices. Han also did not disclose what he may have viewed through the live feeds or explain his motives during investigations.
Han is expected to return to court on May 26 for mitigation and sentencing.
