A National University of Singapore (NUS) assistant professor has been charged with cannabis consumption and other drug-related offences on Feb 27.
According to The Straits Times, Jevdic Dorde, 39, who is a member of the School of Computing’s Department of Computer Science, is facing charges of drug consumption, possession of a vape device containing a cannabinol derivative, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Dorde, who hails from Serbia, was suspended from his position at NUS since August 2023.
The university stated that he will be subject to internal disciplinary processes pending the outcome of the court proceedings. The university emphasized that all staff members are expected to uphold high standards of professional and personal conduct, including compliance with Singapore’s laws and regulations.
According to CNA, the 39-year-old was charged for consuming a cannabinol derivative called 11-Nor-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid around early August 2023; for possessing drug utensils at a unit in Clementi Road on Aug 4, 2023; and for possessing a vape device containing a cannabinol derivative in the form of tetrahydrocannabinol.
The drug utensils in possession according to reports are four straws, a rubber tube and a glass utensil.
“All NUS staff are expected to hold themselves up to high standards of professional and personal conduct, including abiding by the laws and regulations of Singapore,” a university spokesperson told ST.
According to court documents, Dorde allegedly consumed cannabis on or before August 4, 2023, and was found with the vape device and drug paraphernalia in a unit at Kent Vale Serviced Residence on Clementi Road.
Dorde’s case has been adjourned to March 26. If convicted of drug consumption, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $20,000.
