An Indian technician working at SIA Engineering Company was sentenced to nine months’ jail after stealing laptops and breaking into a server room at the company’s Changi office.
According to a report by The Straits Times (ST), Chinnavan Tamilarasan, 32, pleaded guilty to one charge of theft in dwelling and another charge of housebreaking. He was sentenced on June 16.
Court documents stated that Chinnavan was employed by a local engineering company and had been assigned to service the air-conditioning system at SIA Engineering. As part of his duties, he was given authorised access to the company’s server room.
Facing financial difficulties, Chinnavan came up with a plan to steal laptops from the office and sell them for money.
On Jan 9, while servicing the air-conditioning system, he stole two new laptops worth about S$3,475 and hid them in the false ceiling inside the server room.
The following day, he returned to retrieve the laptops. Knowing that using his access card would leave a digital record, he used an electrical test pen to tamper with the control box outside the room and unlock the door.
After entering the room, he collected the laptops, hiding one in his locker and placing the other in a black trash bag before carrying it out of the office.
Later, he met his uncle at International Business Park in Jurong East and handed over one of the laptops for safekeeping and assistance in resetting its password. His uncle was reportedly unaware that the laptop had been stolen.
The theft was discovered on Jan 12 when an SIA Engineering manager noticed the laptops were missing and questioned Chinnavan, who denied any knowledge of the incident.
That same evening, Chinnavan returned to the Changi office intending to break in again. To avoid security guards at the main entrance, he climbed over a fence before using the same method to unlock the server room.
Inside, he removed a tray containing 16 hard disk drives of unknown value. However, a security guard spotted him after he exited the room and detained him before calling the police.
Officers recovered one of the laptops and the hard disk drives from Chinnavan. The second laptop was later recovered from his uncle.
