UOL Group (UOL) has issued an apology following backlash over a TikTok video that depicted a group of attendees in blackface during a recent event, drawing significant criticism on social media.
The video, shared on Sunday by user @summer88959, has attracted thousands of views on various social media platforms. It features eight individuals posing for a photograph while adorned in blackface, complete with afro wigs, sunglasses, and retro style attire.
A caption on the video questioned whether their actions would incur any repercussions, stating: “Emmm … like that will kena (be punished) or not?”
The incident took place at UOL’s annual dinner and dance event, “The Rhythm of the Night,” which was co-hosted with Pan Pacific Hotels Group, a subsidiary of UOL.
The extravagant celebration was held on November 14 at the Sands Grand Ballroom at Marina Bay Sands.
In response to inquiries from media, a UOL spokesperson acknowledged the incident, offering a sincere apology to those offended.
“We sincerely apologise for any offence caused,” reiterated the spokesperson.
Pan Pacific Hotels Group, when approached for comment, redirected queries to UOL for further clarification.
The viral TikTok video has incited a wave of anger and disappointment from social media users, many of whom criticized the group for their insensitive portrayal and lack of awareness regarding cultural appropriation.
