A man has been sentenced to five weeks’ jail for knocking a police officer unconscious with a single punch during a drunken altercation near Boat Quay.
According to TODAY, Devesh Raj Rajasegaran, 24, pleaded guilty in March this year to one count of voluntarily causing hurt. His defence counsel stated that they will be appealing against the sentence.
On June 25, 2022, a group of police officers was sent to Circular Road in response to a report of a large argument of “more than 10 people” taking place. .
Prior to their arrival, Devesh and his friend Eeshwar were drinking nearby. When the officers reached the scene, they noticed a commotion involving Devesh and Eeshwar, among others.
The officers, some of whom were volunteer police officers in plain clothes, approached the group and identified themselves. As two officers were speaking with a member of the group, Devesh confronted them and ultimately threw a punch, striking one officer on the left side of his head, the report added.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Brian Tan stated in court documents that the accused had been under the influence of alcohol when he struck the victim, causing the latter to lose consciousness for at least a minute.
