A 29-year-old Singaporean man has been ordered to pay an S$8,000 fine after pleading guilty to criminal intimidation in a case involving threats made towards a 25-year-old woman.
The man, Xets Low Teck Wei, had become upset after the woman blocked him on messaging application Telegram while playing the mobile game Mobile Legends with her male friends.
Xets Low Teck Wei was found guilty of sending threatening messages to a 25-year-old woman, whose identity is protected by a court order, after she blocked him on the messaging application Telegram.
WHAT HAPPENED :
The incident occurred on Oct 18, 2022, when the woman was playing the mobile game Mobile Legends with her male friends. Low became upset and demanded that she return money he had lent her. After she transferred the money and blocked him on Telegram, Low began sending threatening messages via iMessage.
According to the report, in his messages, Low threatened to kill the woman and said he was on his way with a knife. He sent a series of threatening texts, where he asked her if she wanted to die and stated, “I will make sure you are dead”.
Furthermore, he mentioned that he was “on the way with a knife” and used explicit language in a message where he requested her to get her ex-boyfriend to “save (her) from getting murdered”.
He also threatened to post an intimate image of the victim in a chat group they both belonged to. Fearing for her safety, the woman reported the threats to the police through a text messaging channel. Police officers went to the woman’s home and arrested Low when he arrived at the housing block.
He was found to be armed with a penknife with a blade measuring about 8.5cm long.
During sentencing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Maximilian Chew sought a fine of between S$6,000 and S$8,000 for Low’s offenses, citing the severity of his threats and the victim’s immediate alarm.
The judge ultimately imposed the maximum fine of S$8,000.
Under Singaporean law, criminal intimidation carries a maximum penalty of up to two years in jail or a fine, or both. For threatening to cause death or grievous hurt, the penalty can be up to 10 years in jail, a fine, or both.
