A 52-year-old technician was sentenced to 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting his biological daughter between ages 12 and 14 over a span of two years, during which time his wife was either overseas or working night shifts.
The man, a permanent resident of Singapore, pleaded guilty in the High Court to two counts of aggravated sexual assault by penetration on Thursday (Jan 16).
In addition to his prison term, the court imposed a one-year sentence in lieu of 24 strokes of the cane; however, he will not face caning due to being over the age of 50. Five other charges related to various sexual offenses were acknowledged during his sentencing.
According to the report, during the court proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) David Koh highlighted the man’s attempts to shift blame onto the victim.
Following his arrest, the technician underwent a psychiatric evaluation where he claimed that the girl had “induced” him to commit the crimes by looking at him in a “sexual mode.”
This assertion prompted an emotional reaction from the man, who, without legal representation, shouted that this was the truth during the hearing.
DPP Koh also referenced a written plea from the man, in which he claimed that the victim’s “sidelong glances” led to his inappropriate behavior.
DETAILS OF THE CASE
The court heard details of the assaults, which took place between July 31, 2019, and August 9, 2019, while the girl’s mother was away visiting relatives in India. The man entered his daughter’s bedroom while she was playing games on her mobile phone, where he rubbed her thigh and sexually violated her despite her protests.
The abuse continued over the following years, including incidents that occurred late at night when the victim’s mother was working night shifts. Despite locking her bedroom door, the man was able to enter due to having a key. The situation escalated when he sent her a pornographic video via WhatsApp.
As per the report, the man repeated his intrusive behavior on her two additional occasions, including once in October 2019, right after she completed her last exam for the Primary School Leaving Examination.
From 2020 onward, the victim’s mother started working night shifts as a security guard, which meant the victim often spent nights alone in the bedroom they shared. Meanwhile, the victim’s brothers occupied another bedroom, and the man slept on a sofa in the living room, while two other bedrooms were rented out to other tenants.
On at least two occasions in 2020 and early 2021, the man entered the victim’s room late at night to inappropriately touch her after everyone else had gone to sleep. Although the girl locked her door at night, the man had a spare key. In 2021, he even sent her a pornographic video via WhatsApp. According to the prosecutor, the victim experienced significant distress and anxiety as a result of these incidents, often remaining alert at night in an attempt to protect herself from her father.
The victim, who became aware of the wrongfulness of her father’s actions after attending sex education classes in secondary school, initially feared reporting the abuse out of concern for her safety. This fear was compounded by a final incident on July 26, 2021, when the man attempted to undo his pants after molesting her. Terrified that he would rape her, the girl fled the room, leading her to confide in her form teacher the following day.
The teacher alerted authorities, and the Ministry of Social and Family Development was notified, subsequently leading to the man’s arrest on July 27, 2021.
