A 26-year-old father has been sentenced to one year in jail after he violently attacked his five-year-old daughter following a fit of rage when she could not locate his mobile phone.
According to ST, the incident occurred on April 22.
DETAILS OF THE CASE
The court heard that the father became agitated when his daughter was unable to find his mobile device. Despite the girl eventually handing the phone to him, his anger escalated into a physical assault. He slapped her multiple times, pulled her hair, and violently dragged her across the room, before throwing her onto a sofa.
The situation worsened when the child’s mother entered the room, prompting the father to hurl vulgarities at her and threaten to throw their two-year-old son from their flat.
In a chilling testimony, Deputy Public Prosecutor Yap Jia Jun detailed the events that unfolded, illustrating the fear experienced by the young girl.
“The accused grabbed (his daughter) by her right arm, dragged her violently, yanked her up so her legs left the ground, slapped her face and flung her onto a sofa”.
“When the victim managed to sit upright, the accused continued yelling at her, causing her to cower. He then slapped her again, causing her to fall to her side and cover her face in pain.”
The mother eventually took both children to the living room to escape the father’s wrath, but he continued yelling, causing the little girl to scream in fear and seek refuge behind her mother.
Later that evening, the police were alerted to the situation, and the girl was taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, where she was treated for injuries, including bruises on her face and left arm.
In her victim impact statement, the child expressed profound pain from the assault, rating her agony a 10 on a scale of one to ten.
“She also reported feeling very scared on the day of the incident,” said the DPP in court.
In court proceedings, the prosecutor requested a sentence ranging from 10 months to a year.
The prosecutor said : “The attack was completely unwarranted and grossly disproportionate to any purported wrongdoing.”
On October 1, the man pleaded guilty to one count of ill-treating his daughter, with an additional count of criminal intimidation considered during sentencing, as per the ST report.
