A property agent who threatened to stab the boss of a finance company after his car was repossessed has been sentenced to six weeks’ jail.
Vernon Yang Zhi Xian, 30, pleaded guilty to three charges, including two counts of harassment, following a series of threatening calls to police and the finance firm Auto Lease on Oct 22, 2024, according to ST.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Xavier Tan told the court that Yang’s car had been repossessed after he defaulted on payments. While trying to retrieve work-related documents from the vehicle, Yang became angry and made violent threats over the phone.
At about 10.30am, he called the Singapore Police Force’s Found and Unclaimed Property Office from a Ghim Moh multi-storey carpark. When the staff member, identified as V1, asked for a report number, Yang grew agitated and said: “You expect me to investigate the case?” He then threatened to stab the boss of Auto Lease if he did not receive a return call that day.
Yang then told V1 : “You don’t call me back by today, I will… bring (a knife and) go and kill people… Now I go to (the boss’) house and stab him!”
Minutes later, Yang contacted the Jurong Police Division and again made threats, saying he could reach the man’s house “within 15 minutes” and stab him.
As per the report Yang who was angry replied: “Within 15 minutes, I can reach the (man’s) house and stab him. If I never find him there, I will go to his workplace, I will stab him.”
Around 10.45am, Yang called Auto Lease’s office directly, demanding that his belongings be returned. He warned an employee, V3, that if his items were not returned by 2pm, he would “take a knife to the company’s office and chop someone.”
The employee alerted police immediately.
Officers later persuaded Yang to meet them at Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, where he was arrested that afternoon.
DPP Tan said Yang had no actual intent to carry out the threats, though his words caused alarm.
Yang was sentenced on Oct 31 to six weeks’ jail and has filed an appeal. His bail was set at $15,000.
