Singaporean authorities have apprehended two Indonesian men aged 36 and 33 for unlawfully entering the country on November 20, 2023. The suspects were intercepted by the Police Coast Guard (PCG) after their fast-moving craft was detected by surveillance systems near the Tanah Merah Coast Road shoreline.
According to Police Press release, at 11:58 pm on November 19, 2023, the PCG’s surveillance system alerted authorities of an unidentified vessel approaching the floating sea barriers at the entrance of Tanah Merah Canal. The craft skillfully avoided the barriers and landed on the nearby coastline.
Acting swiftly, officers from the PCG, Bedok Police Division, the Gurkha Contingent, and the Special Operations Command promptly responded to the situation and managed to apprehend the two men within seven hours of the initial detection.
The suspects were found to be in possession of no valid travel documents, further solidifying their unlawful entry into Singapore, the police added.
Additionally, a 5-meter-long fiberglass sampan, equipped with an outboard motor, was confiscated as a crucial piece of evidence for the case.
The police investigation is currently underway.
Both men are set to be brought before the court on November 21, 2023, and charged with the offense of unlawful entry into Singapore under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959.
If convicted, they could face an imprisonment term of up to six months and not less than three strokes of the cane.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Cheang Keng Keong, the Commander of the Police Coast Guard, praised the vigilance and exemplary teamwork displayed by the law enforcement officers, which expedited the arrest. He emphasized that the PCG will remain committed to taking decisive measures against offenders who attempt unauthorized entry into or departure from Singapore, safeguarding the nation’s waters and sea borders against crime and security threats.
