A significant discovery was made at a construction site in Singapore as a 100kg World War II aerial bomb was unearthed during excavation works along Upper Bukit Timah Road.
Authorities have since taken swift action to ensure the safe disposal of this historical relic.
The find was reported to the police a week before the announcement. Upon assessment, it was determined that moving the bomb would pose a considerable risk. As a result, the Singapore Armed Forces’ (SAF) explosive ordnance disposal team will conduct an “on-site controlled disposal” of the bomb.
The operation is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 26, between 8 am and 7 pm. During this period, a 200-meter safety cordon will be established around the area, ensuring the safety of nearby residents and the public.
Residents in several properties in the vicinity, including The Linear, Hazel Park, Bukit 828, Block 154 Gangsa Road, and Hazel Park Terrace, will need to temporarily vacate their buildings. Shophouses along Upper Bukit Timah Road will also be affected. Greenridge Secondary School will switch to home-based learning for the day.
Drone activities in the disposal area will be prohibited.
From 11 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, sections of the Bukit Panjang Flyover and Upper Bukit Timah Road will be temporarily closed. Only police, SAF emergency, and authorized vehicles will be allowed access to these roads. Traffic Police officers will be on-site to assist and redirect motorists.
Authorities have cautioned the public about the expected loud sounds during the controlled disposal operation. They advise residents and passersby not to be alarmed and to stay clear of the designated area. The authorities will announce when it is safe to resume normal activities in the vicinity.
This discovery is not the first of its kind in Singapore. In 2021, a similar projectile believed to be a war relic was found in Lorong 12 Geylang. In the preceding year, another such case was uncovered in the Thomson area, with the projectile transported elsewhere for disposal.
In 2019, a 50kg aerial bomb found in River Valley during construction works was also safely disposed of on-site.
