Singapore’s authorities have apprehended two men and a male teenager in connection with their alleged involvement in a conspiracy to commit robbery.
The arrests came after a 33-year-old man reported a case of robbery to the Police on November 18, 2023, providing crucial information that led to the swift capture of the suspects, according to police press release.
According to preliminary investigations, the victim had received an enticing offer from an unknown individual on Telegram to exchange crypto tokens for cash.
Following the stranger’s instructions, the victim arranged a meeting with a 16-year-old boy at Punggol Field to exchange approximately $81,000 in cash for the tokens.
However, as the victim was counting the money, the teenager reportedly snatched the bag and attempted to flee the scene.
Determined to retrieve his money, the victim pursued the teenager, eventually cornering him.
The young suspect brandished a kitchen knife in an attempt to intimidate the victim, the press release added.
Fortunately, the knife was dropped during the altercation, allowing the apprehension of the teenager with the assistance of two men and a female bystander. The Police promptly arrived and successfully recovered the entirety of the stolen cash.
Thanks to diligent investigative work, analyzing images from law enforcement cameras and conducting extensive ground enquiries, officers from both Ang Mo Kio and Bedok Police Divisions managed to establish the identities of two additional suspects allegedly involved in the incident.
Subsequently, a 33-year-old man was arrested near Circuit Road, while a 27-year-old man was apprehended along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9. Both arrests took place on the same day as the initial report.
The 33-year-old man and 16-year-old male teenager are scheduled to appear in court on November 20, 2023. They face charges of conspiracy to commit robbery under Section 392 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code. The investigation into the involvement of the 27-year-old man is still ongoing.
In light of this incident, the Police are urging the public not to carry significant amounts of cash when out in public. Additionally, individuals are advised to remain calm if confronted during a robbery, take note of the perpetrator’s physical appearance and any distinctive features, and promptly contact the authorities for assistance.
Law enforcement agencies continue to remind citizens to exercise caution and vigilance while conducting financial transactions, particularly involving online platforms.
