Using a fictitious identity, occupation, and the image of another man as his display picture, a man chatted with a woman on a mobile application.
Despite having just about S$22 in his bank account, he continued to offer her money in exchange for a meeting and sexual encounter.
According to Channel News Asia’s report, Li Jiajie a 32-year-old man was sentenced on Friday (Oct 21) to 12 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane. He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated rape, with another two charges under the Films Act taken into consideration.
WHAT HAPPENED :
Li took the victim to his rented home after they met where he strangled, punched and raped her.
The court was informed that Li, a citizen of China, was employed as a room service employee in a hotel in Singapore. He met the victim, a 28-year-old lady, through a mobile chat app in May 2018.
Li adopted a pseudonym in place of his real name and used an online profile photo that belonged to another man, according to CNA.
“I Am Not A Prostitute”
He kept asking the victim to “accompany” him for S$2,000 while pretending to be an engineer.
The victim recognised that this was a sexual offer and turned it down. That she wasn’t a prostitute, she assured him.
They kept communicating practically every day as they continued to discuss various topics. Li assured her that he would treat her well and that he liked and missed her.
He insisted on meeting with her and upped his offer to S$2,500. Additionally, he suggested that she try meeting him after drinking.
On June 8, 2018, Li requested that they meet, and she consented. She questioned whether he would use protection and whether he would respect her decision if she changed her mind after they met. Yes, he replied.
HAD ONLY $22 IN BANK ACCOUNT
When she asked for a bank transfer on the way to their meeting, Li replied that he did not know how to make one and that he would pay in cash instead.
In reality, he didn’t have the cash on hand because he had no savings other than the $22 he had in his bank
The victim informed Li that he didn’t resemble his profile photo at all when they first met. He answered that there was no distinction. After midnight, they arrived at his apartment via foot. Li shut the door after leading the woman into a small space.
He remained silent when she asked for money. After that, the woman claimed she wanted to return home and booked a Grab, but Li wouldn’t let her. When she failed to arrive, the Grab driver cancelled the trip.
“RAPED HER“
The woman informed Li that she would contact the police, but he responded by threatening to inform them that she had engaged in self-prostitution. Before forcing himself on her, he forced the woman to the ground so hard that her skull twice struck a wall.
The victim yelled and scratched Li, but Li choked her and gave her a few hard blows to the head. Then he raped her. Li raped the woman once more despite her attempts to get him to let her go.
In the shower, he later followed her, but the victim was too dazed to react. Li insisted on riding the elevator down with her and promised to meet her at the police station if she called the police.
The victim booked a Grab ride, but the driver could not find her, so she flagged down a taxi. She decided to go to a police post. Li asked her to send him her location, but she did not reply.
As the police post was closed, the victim called 999. Police officers went down to her location and she told them she had been assaulted and raped.
The victim later went to the hospital for a medical examination. The doctor found a 2cm bruise on her forehead, a 12cm by 10cm bruise on her neck and redness in her pelvic area. Li was arrested at his workplace.
An examination at the Institute of Mental Health found that he was of sound mind.
The victim was strangled by Li with such force that a 12 cm by 10 cm bruise appeared on her neck, according to the prosecution, which claimed that there was fraud in this case.
“Moment Of Impulse”
According to the defence, Li was planning to borrow money from a friend in order to pay the victim in full the following day.
Li requested to speak to the court directly, and apologised to the victim and her family in Mandarin, saying it was a “moment of impulse”.
“I would also like to apologise to the government officials because of the crimes I have committed. I might have caused inconvenience to their work,” he said. He said he hoped for a chance as he had a mother back in China who was waiting for him to go home.
“I wish I can go home early to take care of her,” he said.
The judge told him that personal family circumstances generally do not constitute a mitigating factor.
For raping someone while putting him or her in fear of hurt, offenders can be jailed for between eight and 20 years, and be punished with at least 12 strokes of the cane.
