WHAT HAPPENED :

According to media reports, a Palestinian gunman killed at least seven people on Friday in a Jewish enclave in east Jerusalem, which Israel conquered in 1967 and later annexed.

Jerusalem District Police Commander Doron Turgeman says the attacker was from East Jerusalem, according to BBC.

According to police, the terrorist arrived by car at 8:13 p.m. in the Jewish East Jerusalem neighborhood and opened fire at people outside the synagogue and other passersby.

He then fled the scene by car toward the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina — several hundred meters away — where, about five minutes later, he encountered officers who were called to the scene.

One of the victims was a 70-year-old lady. The incident happened as violence and tensions between Israel and the Palestinians were on the rise. The Israeli Defense Forces raided the West Bank city of Jenin the day before the shooting on Friday, which resulted in the deaths of nine Palestinians.

After visiting the scene, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attack was “one of the most terrible we have known in years.”
