A 25-year-old Singaporean man has been charged in a Malaysian court over the fatal stabbing of a fellow Singaporean earlier this month in Johor’s Southkey commercial district.
According to Media reports, the accused, Muhammad Arif Saiyadi, a store supervisor, appeared before the Johor Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He is alleged to have murdered Chia Hon Chung, 32, in an incident that occurred near a nightclub on March 14.
As per the earlier reports, the victim—initially described as a foreign national—was attacked with a sharp weapon and sustained a fatal stab wound to the neck. He later died after being transported to Sultan Ismail Hospital.
Arif was charged under Section 302 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment of up to 40 years upon conviction. If not sentenced to death, the punishment also includes a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
The accused was unrepresented in court and no plea was recorded during the proceedings. Reports indicated that he acknowledged the charge with a nod.
Authorities have yet to establish a clear motive, and investigations remain ongoing.
The court has scheduled the next mention of the case for June 3, pending the completion of key forensic reports, including the autopsy, chemical analysis, and DNA testing.
Series of Arrests Across Borders
The case has involved coordinated enforcement efforts between Malaysian and Singaporean authorities. The first suspect was arrested on March 18 by officers from the Johor Bahru South district police headquarters while allegedly attempting to leave Malaysia for Singapore.
Subsequently, four additional suspects were detained in Singapore on March 19 in a joint operation conducted by the Singapore Police Force following warrants issued by Malaysian authorities. The arrests took place at a residential unit along Teban Gardens Road, and the individuals were handed over to Malaysian police the same day.
A sixth suspect was later apprehended on March 25.
Police have not disclosed the exact date of Arif’s arrest.
