A 16-year-old boy, now 17, armed himself with a knife and attempted to rob a man of a paper bag containing $81,060 after being promised a reward for the crime.
According Straits Times report, on January 21, the teenager pleaded guilty to one count of attempted robbery. Due to the offender’s age, he cannot be named under the Children and Young Persons Act.
The teenager is scheduled to be sentenced in March 2025.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED :
The incident transpired on November 18, 2023, when the victim was targeted after being contacted by someone known only as “Dilton” on the messaging platform Telegram.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Jing Min revealed in court that “Dilton” had approached the teenager in mid-November with a job offer that involved taking money and running away.
The prosecutor stated, “The job was to ‘take money and run away’,” adding that “Dilton” advised the boy to purchase a knife to “scare the other party.”

The teenager accepted the offer, and on the morning of November 18, he received further instructions from “Dilton” to carry out the job that day. The plan involved meeting a man at the void deck of a Punggol block of flats, where the teenager was supposed to pretend to count the money before fleeing with it.
To facilitate the crime, “Dilton” transferred $100 to the teenager’s bank account to cover the cost of the knife and transportation. The teenager purchased the knife in Bukit Merah, concealed it in his waistband, and wrapped a piece of cloth around the handle to avoid leaving fingerprints, the report added.

Arriving at Punggol around 2:30 PM, the teenager met a 33-year-old man who was carrying the paper bag with the cash, intended for purchasing cryptocurrency after agreeing on a price with an unknown user via Telegram. As the teenager began to count the money, he seized the bag and fled.
DPP Tan recounted, “The victim gave chase. The accused attempted to take out the knife from… his waist(band)… but the knife slipped from the accused’s grasp and dropped on the floor.” The victim managed to restrain the teenager, and the police were alerted shortly thereafter.
The court has called for reports to assess the offender’s suitability for both probation and reformative training, with the latter involving detention in a facility that includes a strict regimen of foot drills and counseling.
