A 40-year-old Malaysian man has been sentenced to 19 months in jail after pleading guilty to multiple voyeurism charges, including taking inappropriate videos of his landlord and her young daughter.

The man, who had been renting a room in the woman’s Housing Board flat for a decade, was caught in a shocking act on April 8, when he attempted to film the woman while she was showering.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lynda Lee detailed the disturbing circumstances in court, stating that on the morning of the incident, the man heard the sound of running water and seized the opportunity to invade the woman’s privacy. He sneaked into her room and positioned his phone beneath the toilet door, aiming to capture video footage of her as she emerged from the shower.

According to Straits Times report, the victim discovered him in the act, where she screamed and the man fled back to his room. Following the incident, the woman immediately contacted her husband, who was at work, prompting him to alert the police.

Investigations revealed a chilling extent of the man’s actions. Authorities found a staggering 24 videos and 74 screenshots stored across 14 different devices, including four mobile phones and six thumb drives. The man also admitted to filming the landlord’s daughter, who was between three and four years old at the time, in various states of undress. He confessed to using the videos for his own sexual gratification.

During the court proceedings, parts of the victim’s statement were read, highlighting the ongoing emotional trauma she experiences as a result of the invasion of privacy. She expressed persistent fears that someone may be lurking outside her bathroom, even when she is alone. The woman also noted that her daughter remains unaware of the incidents.

The man faced a maximum penalty of two years in prison, along with potential fines and caning for his actions. Two additional charges were considered during his sentencing, reflecting the gravity of the offenses.

The court has imposed a gag order to protect the identities of the victims involved.
