Two separate incidents involving massage parlors in Thailand have left the nation in shock, as a promising young singer and a Singaporean man both lost their lives following massage treatments.
THAI WOMAN DEAD
Chayada Prao-hom, a 20-year-old singer from Udon Thani, was pronounced dead early Friday morning after suffering severe complications, including a blood infection and brain swelling.
According to reports, Chayada had visited a local massage parlor three times in the month leading up to her death, seeking relief for back pain.
Reports indicate that Ms. Chyada, who sought relief for shoulder pain, began experiencing severe symptoms shortly after receiving a massage that included neck twisting. Initially, her condition worsened over the course of several weeks, culminating in a painful neck, weakness in her right arm, and ultimately 50% paralysis of her body.
Her boyfriend reported that after her first visit on October 5, she began experiencing numbness on one side of her body, which escalated to an inability to move her left arm.
Concerned fans had been following her health updates through social media, where she had expressed hope for recovery after experiencing persistent pain following her massages.
“I thought it was just normal pain from the massage,” she wrote in a Facebook post, describing the initial session as routine. However, the discomfort worsened over time, leading to her hospitalization in the intensive care unit, where she ultimately succumbed to her condition.
The alarming details surrounding her case have gained significant attention after being shared on the Drama Addict Facebook page, which announced her death on December 8.
In their post, they cautioned the public about the risks associated with neck massages, noting that the neck is particularly vulnerable, and excessive pressure can potentially harm blood vessels leading to the brain or spinal cord.
“People should avoid receiving a massage on the neck or spine,” the post advised. It further urged individuals experiencing symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, dizziness, or limb weakness to seek medical attention immediately.
As per the Thai examiner report, on November 6, Chayada was admitted to an Intensive Care Unit after experiencing unbearable pain, just ahead of a scheduled appointment on the 16th. Her condition quickly deteriorated, leading to an investigation by the Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) into the massage shop she frequented.
Officials aimed to determine whether the shop was properly accredited and if the massage techniques used were in line with standard practices for Thai traditional massage. Concerns were raised about the potential for injury due to improper methods employed by some practitioners.
Chayada’s boyfriend, Mr. Phuminarong, shared heart-wrenching details about their relationship and her declining health. He recounted their plans for engagement and how Chayada had recently been experiencing back pain, which led them to seek massage therapy multiple times at the same shop.
Tragically, after her third visit, her condition worsened significantly, culminating in a dislocated neck bone and severe complications that required emergency hospitalization. Despite his constant support and encouragement during her time in the hospital, Chayada’s health continued to decline, marking a heartbreaking end to her promising life as an artist.
SINGAPOREAN MAN DEAD
In a separate incident on Dec 7, a 52-year-old Singaporean man, identified as Mr. Lee Mun Tuck, died shortly after receiving a 45-minute oil massage at a parlor in Patong Beach, Phuket.
Witnesses reported that Mr. Lee appeared to be in good spirits during the massage, even falling asleep and snoring. However, he soon displayed signs of distress and did not regain consciousness despite attempts at resuscitation by the staff.
Patong police chief Pol Col Chalermchai Hernsawad reported that police were called to the scene at 11:03 PM, according to the Bangkok Post. The Phuket News added that the man had fallen asleep during the procedure, snoring loudly, but soon began showing signs of distress. Despite efforts by the massage parlour’s staff to resuscitate him, the man did not regain consciousness.
According to local news reports, Mr. Lee’s wife declined an autopsy, opting instead to take his body home for religious rituals. According to his wife, Mr. Lee had a “sedentary lifestyle” with minimal exercise and inadequate rest. She revealed that on the day of the incident, he had consumed beer before visiting the massage parlor, which he frequently patronized.
“After completing his 45-minute oil massage, he was resting when what appeared to be loud snoring (which was actually agonal breathing) was heard, before he became unresponsive”.
