A 40-year-old woman has been arrested by the police following a tragic road accident that occurred at Institution Hill in River Valley. The incident resulted in the unfortunate death of a four-year-old girl named Zara Mei Orlic. The woman has been apprehended on suspicion of careless driving causing death, and police investigations are currently underway.
The incident took place on January 23 at approximately 4:55 pm.
According to the authorities, a collision transpired between a car and a pedestrian along Institution Hill towards River Valley Road. The Singapore Civil Defence Force swiftly responded to the accident and rushed the young victim to the hospital.
However, despite their efforts, Zara Mei Orlic succumbed to her injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver, who reportedly resides in a nearby condominium, waited for the police to arrive at the scene. The gravity of the situation prompted the dispatch of a tow truck to the accident site.
Four-year-old girl Zara Orlic tragically died after being hit by a car while crossing the road with her maid on Jan 23. Zara’s father, Nick Orlic, spoke to The Straits Times about the incident, saying that the maid had given Zara the green light to cross after checking that it was safe. Zara’s six-year-old sister was not with them at the time.
Dr. Orlic, who is a senior lecturer at Nanyang Business School, described Zara as a careful girl who was taught to check the roads before crossing. He added that the street where the accident occurred was usually not busy with traffic, although illegal parking and speeding cars were a problem. The maid, an Indonesian in her 30s, said she could not reach Zara in time to prevent the accident.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed Zara to the hospital. Despite the efforts of doctors, Zara’s chances of survival were not good. Her parents decided to stop the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and let her go. The police have arrested a 40-year-old woman under suspicion of careless driving causing death.
